Chelsea vs Manchester United

Competition – English Premier League

Stadium: Stamford Bridge

Date: 18th April 2026

Kick-off time – 20:00 GMT

Saturday night at Stamford Bridge delivers one of English football’s most storied fixtures, but neither side arrives in the kind of form that justifies much optimism. Chelsea have been poor in recent weeks and are bleeding Premier League momentum at a point in the season where every game has real consequence. Manchester United are inconsistent at best, yet still within range of the European places and unable to afford a slip-up against a struggling rival.

Chelsea’s recent run has been deeply disappointing for a club with top-six ambitions. Their most recent outing ended in a 3–0 home defeat to Manchester City — a result that underlined the gap between their ceiling and the division’s best. Prior to that, they served up one of the more comfortable victories of their campaign, beating Port Vale 7–0 at home in the FA Cup — but the calibre of opponent makes that hard to read across into league context. Before that, they were beaten 3–0 away at Everton, a sobering result against a mid-table side. Earlier in this run, they suffered a 3–0 home defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League knockout stage, and the oldest result in the sequence was a 1–0 home loss to Newcastle United. One win from five, with four defeats — three of them conceding three goals — is alarming form for a side in sixth place, and tonight represents an opportunity to arrest the slide or deepen the crisis.

Manchester United are similarly inconsistent but arrive in slightly less fraught circumstances. Their most recent outing ended in a 1–2 home defeat to Leeds United — a result that will have hurt given the rivalry and the league position. Prior to that, they drew 2–2 away at AFC Bournemouth, a point that felt more like two dropped than one gained. Before that came their best result in the five — a 3–1 home win over Aston Villa, a performance that showed their quality when things click. Earlier in this run, they were beaten 2–1 away at Newcastle United, and the oldest result in the five was a 2–1 home win over Crystal Palace. Two wins from five is not championship form, but it is better than what Chelsea have managed.

In the table, Chelsea are sixth on 48 points from 32 games. Manchester United are third on 55 points — seven points above Chelsea. A Man United win would extend that gap to ten points and further confirm their grip on third; a Chelsea win would cut it to four and reignite a top-four battle. A draw changes little for either side.

The head-to-head record is evenly balanced, with both sides having won two of the last five meetings and one draw. Most recently, Manchester United won 2–1 at home to Chelsea in September 2025. In the previous encounter, Chelsea won 1–0 at home to Manchester United in May 2025.

Both squads carry injury concerns. Chelsea are without Jamie Gittens and Mykhailo Mudryk, and have doubts over Trevoh Chalobah, Filip Jörgensen and Benoît Badiashile. Manchester United are hit harder at the back, with Patrick Dorgu, Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martínez all out — essentially their entire senior centre-back options — and Kobbie Mainoo listed as doubtful. A makeshift United defensive unit could be the deciding factor in what may be an open and scrappy contest.

Chelsea (4-2-3-1)

Sánchez, Cucurella, Fofana, Hato, Gusto, Caicedo, Santos, Neto, Palmer, Pedro, Estêvão

Manchester United (4-2-3-1)

Lammens, Shaw, Mainoo, Yoro, Dalot, Casemiro, Heaven, Mbeumo, Fernandes, Diallo, Cunha

Chelsea: Jamie Gittens (Out), Mykhailo Mudryk (Out), Trevoh Chalobah (Doubtful), Filip Jörgensen (Doubtful), Benoît Badiashile (Doubtful)

Manchester United: Patrick Dorgu (Out), Matthijs de Ligt (Out), Harry Maguire (Out), Lisandro Martínez (Out), Kobbie Mainoo (Doubtful)

Manchester United are significantly worse affected defensively, with their entire senior centre-back depth wiped out. Chelsea’s absences are more spread but less critical to their structure; United’s backline problem could leave them exposed against Chelsea’s attacking options.
