Borussia Dortmund vs Werder Bremen Preview

Borussia Dortmund vs Werder Bremen

Competition – German Bundesliga

Stadium: Signal Iduna Park

Date: 9th October 2026

Kick-off time – 19:30 GMT

Five matches, five wins, three different competitions: Dortmund go into Friday’s game at Signal Iduna Park as the only side in the Bundesliga still holding a perfect record after four rounds. Werder Bremen arrive in less settled shape. Their most recent outing was a 7-0 defeat to Twente in a club friendly on 2 October, and while that result has no bearing on the table, it is the heaviest scoreline in either side’s recent run. In the league the visitors have been far steadier, taking seven points from four games to sit eighth, five behind the leaders and level on points with the four sides directly above them. The history of this fixture leans heavily towards the hosts as well, with Dortmund unbeaten in the last five meetings. A home win would keep the pressure on everyone below them, while Werder will be looking for a first win over Dortmund in the sample and a result that lifts them back into the chasing group behind the top three.

Dortmund have won all of their last five, scoring 15 goals and conceding four. The latest was a 1-0 win away to Stuttgart on 19 September, a narrow margin but one of three clean sheets in the run. A week earlier they beat Paderborn 3-0 at Signal Iduna Park in their only home league game of the sample. Champions League football in the league phase brought a 3-2 home win over Villarreal on 8 September, one of just two matches in the five in which they conceded; the other was a 3-2 win away at Hoffenheim three days before that. The oldest result is also the most one-sided, a 5-0 win away to HEBC Hamburg in the DFB-Pokal on 1 September. Dortmund have scored at least three goals in four of the five, although three of the wins were settled by a single goal.

Werder’s last five read two wins, a draw and two defeats, though the most recent of those losses needs context. The 7-0 defeat to Twente came in a club friendly on 2 October, so it carries no league consequence, but it accounts for almost half of the 15 goals they have conceded across the sample. Their last competitive outing was a 3-2 home win over Augsburg on 19 September. A week earlier they drew 1-1 away at FC Koln, and on 5 September they beat RB Leipzig 3-1 at home. Rounding off the run is a 4-1 defeat away to Freiburg at the end of August. Both wins came at home and both defeats away, a split worth noting ahead of a trip to the league leaders. Across the four league games alone, Werder have scored eight and conceded eight.

Dortmund are unbeaten in the last five meetings, winning three and drawing two, so Werder are still looking for a first win in this sample. The most recent meeting was a 2-0 Dortmund win away at Werder in May 2026, and four months before that Dortmund won 3-0 at Signal Iduna Park. Werder have failed to score in three of the five, and the aggregate across the run is 9-3 in Dortmund’s favour. Their only other visit to Dortmund in the sample ended 2-2 in January 2025, the one meeting in which they scored twice. The remaining two games were both played at Werder: a 0-0 draw in August 2024 and a 2-1 Dortmund win in March 2024.

Dortmund top the Bundesliga on 12 points, two clear of Bayern München and Freiburg, while Werder sit eighth on seven. A win would take Dortmund to 15 points and guarantee they stay top whatever happens elsewhere in this round, at least two points clear of the chasing pack.
